Bird Books

The following is a list of bird books recommended by various members of the Kawartha Field Naturalists. Note that field guides are the best resource for birding outings.

  • Silence of the Songbirds - how we are losing the world's songbirds and what we can do to save them - Bridget Stutchbury - this book is available from the City of Kawartha Lakes Library and is a must read.

  • Eastern Birds (a field guide) - Roger Tory Peterson

  • Kingbird Highway (the story of a natural obsession that got a little out of hand) - Kenn Kaufman


  • The Sibley Guide to Birds - David Allen Sibley


  • The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America - David Allen Sibley


  • The Big Year: a tale of man, nature, and fowl obsession - Mark Obmascik, Simon and Schuster

  • About Birds; A Guide for Children - Cathryn and John Sill


  • Backyard Birds Peterson Field Guides for Young Naturalists

  • The Kids Canadian Bird Book - Pamela Hickman, Heather Collins


  • A Place for Owls - Katherine McKeever. Greey de Pencier Books, 1987. These are true animal stories.
